Posting regularly, clearing editing backlog, making good habits

Posting on social media

Something I’ve noticed is that although I look at social media multiple times per day, I don’t post most of the time, yet when I do post I realise that without regular content, I don’t get the engagement I need to grow my audience. After some research, it appears that Instagram and Facebook prefer daily posts Mon-Sat, or at least a regular schedule, while Threads and Bluesky prefer more regular text posts throughout the day, as well as regular image posts. I have also decided to try and avoid posting the same images to each platform, instead changing the selection where possible. This doesn’t work so well with smaller posts where I only have 6 images total, however I feel it worked nicely for my recent posts showcasing the Trafalgar Square rally commemorating the 3rd year of full scale war in Ukraine, as I had over 60 final images available to pick from.

Editing

A key part of photography is editing the RAW photos and creating a collection of images that reflect your artistic vision. However, editing also involves organising and archiving photos, culling photos that aren’t up to standard, labelling and adjusting metadata, and so much more. It’s a lot easier to go out on a walk and come back with 200-300 photos than it is to make oneself sit down and sort through all those photos, so over the course of the past few months I had built up a backlog of around 600 photos that needed sorting, culling, picking and finally editing. With some concerted effort and self bribing with chocolate, I managed to clear most of this in a week, spending an average of an hour each day categorising all these photos before being able to pick the ones I wanted to keep, and then editing them.

Habits

From now on, I am aiming to create some good habits with my work. I have built a folder structure and template for archiving my photos, as well as a workflow using Lightroom that allows me to easily cull and select images to edit. I am starting to schedule posts in advance using images from the backlog I cleared, while I start to plan out future posts, and I am setting myself a goal of one post each day, Monday to Saturday for now. For creating more content, I am thinking of starting a series where I take a photo every day, while sticking to one particular lens or genre for a set period of time to fuel some creative thinking. My website is getting regular updates with not only my posts, but some quality of life improvements, better tagging, and a new footer with more social medias, as well as my contact email.

Next up, building the confidence to start some new projects.
